Oscar Ranilla Cateriano
A Life of Purpose: Wisdom, Wellness, and Unwavering Family Ties.
My uncle Oscar is someone I have always seen as a pioneer in our family. He was one of the first to leave Peru and build a life in the United States, making his home in Miami, Florida. That took courage, especially at a time when taking such a step meant leaving behind familiar places, family, and everything that came with starting over in a new country.
When my brother and I reached adulthood, we decided to move to Miami and stayed with him for a period of time. Living with my uncle gave us more than just a place to stay. It gave us the chance to become more independent, more responsible with money, and more aware of what it means to build a life for ourselves. It was also a time when I got to know him more closely than I had before, and that is one of the reasons I feel such a strong connection with him today.
My uncle Oscar worked at a local bank, and in many ways, that experience helped inspire my own interest in working in the financial industry. Seeing someone in the family build a career in that field made it feel more possible for me to explore that path myself. He has always been very good at managing money and making practical decisions, and I consider him a successful man because of the discipline and consistency he has shown over the years.
One of the things I admire most about him is that he was able to retire at a relatively young age. That is not something that happens by accident. It reflects years of planning, financial discipline, and knowing how to make smart decisions. It is an example I hope to follow in my own life.
He is also very disciplined when it comes to his health. He goes to the gym, stays active, and takes care of himself. He is one of those people who seems younger than his age because he has made fitness and movement part of his lifestyle. His discipline is something I respect because it shows in the way he approaches both his health and his finances.
Uncle Oscar is also proudly Republican and, in the most lighthearted way, a Trump supporter until the very end. We do not always see things the same way, and we can have very different perspectives on certain topics, but I still value hearing his point of view. I respect the confidence with which he speaks about what he believes and the life experience behind many of his opinions.
One of the things I admire most about my uncle Oscar is the care he gave to his mother after my grandmother immigrated to the United States. During her later years, he was there for her and took on the responsibility of caring for her. That says a great deal about him, not only as a son, but as a person. His loyalty to family and the way he showed up for her is something I deeply respect and admire.
There are always stories, conversations, and lessons that come from spending time with him. I have learned from his experiences, his discipline, his financial mindset, and the way he has built his life in the United States. He is someone who has taken risks, worked hard, and created stability for himself.
It has been some time since I last saw him, but I hope to visit him again soon when I am in Florida. My uncle Oscar will always be someone I look up to, not only because of what he has accomplished, but because of the example he gave to younger members of the family who were trying to find their own path.
