Janet Ranilla Cateriano
A devoted mother, beloved godmother, dedicated teacher, and guardian of our family's history.
Aunt Janet has been an important part of my life for as long as I can remember. Not only is she my aunt, but she is also my godmother, making our connection especially meaningful to me. Some of my fondest childhood memories include time spent with her, Uncle Tito, and my cousin Alessandra. Growing up, they were among the relatives I saw most often on the Ranilla side of the family, and many of those memories took place at my grandmother María Jesús's home, where family gatherings, celebrations, and everyday moments created memories that I continue to treasure today.
One of the things that has always stood out about Aunt Janet is her dedication to education and personal growth. She has spent much of her life working as an early childhood educator, helping young children learn and develop during some of the most important years of their lives. Long before it became common within our family, she pursued the study of English and became the first member of the Ranilla family to do so. Even today, she continues expanding her knowledge and preparing herself to teach English, reflecting her lifelong commitment to learning and self-improvement.
She has always been known for being organized, disciplined, and dependable. Whether in her professional life or within the family, she approaches things with care and attention to detail. Those qualities have made her someone that others naturally trust and rely upon.
During her younger years, aunt Janet was recognized for her beauty and elegance and was crowned Miss Camana. While that achievement remains a special part of her story, those who know her best would likely say that her intelligence, kindness, and character are what truly define her. She carries herself with grace, confidence, and a genuine concern for others.
Over the years, she has also become one of the keepers of our family's history. She has carefully preserved photographs, albums, and memories that help tell the story of the Ranilla family. If someone has a question about a relative, a family event, or a photograph from years ago, there is a good chance that aunt Janet knows the answer. Her remarkable memory and dedication to preserving family history have become an invaluable gift to all of us.
One of the qualities I admire most about aunt Janet is her devotion as a mother. She faced one of life's greatest challenges while caring for her son Hector, who required extraordinary love, attention, and support throughout his life. She dedicated herself to him with remarkable strength, patience, and unwavering commitment, always putting his needs first.
Watching the care and dedication she gave to her son taught our family a great deal about the meaning of unconditional love. The loss of Hector was undoubtedly one of the most difficult moments of her life, yet the love she showed him every day remains one of the qualities I admire most about her. To me, she is an example of resilience, compassion, and a mother's endless devotion to her child. I like to think that Hector is now watching over her with the same love that she gave him throughout his life.
Despite the distance, she remains deeply connected to the family. She visits relatives in Miami frequently, often making the trip year after year to spend time with those she loves. Her commitment to maintaining those relationships reflects how important family has always been to her.
One of the things I appreciate most is that whenever I visit Lima, aunt Janet is often one of the first people to reach out. She still calls me by my childhood nickname, "Coquito," and invites me to her home to spend an afternoon together and share a meal. It is a simple gesture, but one that means a great deal to me. It reflects the warmth, generosity, and affection that have always been part of who she is.
To me, aunt Janet represents family, learning, kindness, resilience, and the importance of preserving the memories that connect generations. As a teacher, a godmother, a wife, a mother, and a guardian of our family's history, she has touched the lives of many people. I will always be grateful for the love, encouragement, and wonderful memories she has given me throughout my life.
