Carlota Salazar Mateo

Carlota Salazar Mateo

1897 - 1993 | Great-Grandmother

Carlota Salazar Mateo was born in 1897 in the highlands of Canta, where life was carved out of stone and necessity. In the thin air of the sierra, women like Carlota were the backbone of their families, raising children, tending the land, and holding everything together through hardship.

Her face carried the marks of a life lived without ease, sun-worn, strong, and full of quiet endurance. She knew poverty and altitude and hard seasons, yet she persevered through all of it with the dignity of a woman who understood that her strength was her family's foundation.

Through her son Eugenio, her resilience traveled down from the mountains and into the lives of every generation that followed. We carry her spirit with us, and we honor the hard life she lived so that others could live better ones.
